BRAZIL PRE SCHOOL KITCHEN EXTENSION

Salvadore, Brazil, South America

Located in the northeast portion of All Saints Bay in Salvador - Bahia, São Tomé de Paripe is a community with approximately 270 people. In addition to lack of quality sanitation, the bay is saturated with heavy metals due to chemical discharge from the nearby pharmaceutical plants.
The site is currently occupied in part by a day care centre. Alongside community members and health professionals, we are designing a master plan to address the major health concerns, with a focus towards the centre’s children.
Stage 1 entails the design of a roof collection system providing clean water for the children. In addition, the system will act as a prototype for other communities in the area. Stage 2 reworks the day care centre into a local community hub.

Stage 3 involved an addition to the kitchen used daily to feed the kids breakfast, lunch & dinner. Also, sun screens to the classroom facade to ease the harsh afternoon sun.

An amazing experience alongside Peter Stutchbury & UON Students. Only 5 days were needed to complete the build.
HANDS ON ARCHITECTURE 2016 AUSINDOARCH
Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia

This design and build workshop involved two Australian universities and two Indonesian universities.
The plan for the workshop gave the students and myself two days to
design a series of temporary bamboo structures & installations for the upcoming
FYI Arts and Music festival in Yogyakarta. We then spent a week on site, physically constructing our designs with the support of Indonesian and Australian architectural mentors and a team of local Javanese craftsmen.
Before the design & construction phase started we visited some amazing bamboo structures to inspire us and think about how we could really test the use of bamboo. We were exposed to the creative and technical aspects of bamboo construction and encouraged to explore the nature of the material.
We planted new bamboo to
sustainably replenish the material used during the project.
